Structural Osteopathy
Structural osteopathy aims at assessing and restoring the health of the musculoskeletal system. The focus is not only on the active and passive movement of muscles and joints, but on all biomechanical aspects – or, better, mechanological, given the birth of this new branch that shows how mechanical stimuli can directly affect the cell biology – of the organism that underlie the proper functioning (“the structure determines the function”) of bones, muscles, blood and lymph circulation and nervous pathways. As a result, manipulations and mobilizations are essential for structural osteopathy.
Thanks to the scientific and clinical research of the last decade, we know that structural osteopathy can positively influence the function of the autonomic nervous system (both ortho- and parasympathetic) in order to ensure better regulation of visceral functions.
Moreover, it is able to modulate the states of central sensitization, that is those conditions where the nervous system, in the absence of organic lesion, shows an hyperactivity that promotes neurogenic inflammation (inflammation caused by the nervous system), “extreme” visceral responses and pain – this is the underlying phenomenon of the so-called “functional” diseases: from tension headaches to primary dysmenorrhea and fibromyalgia.
